About the Speakers

Mike Edwards, Matrix RMS has been involved in an executive capacity in the self-funded, reinsurance and insurance field for over 20 years. Mr. Edwards entered the health insurance field as a risk manager responsible for the initial development of a self-funded medical plan, group life, LTD and 401(K) programs for a large multi-state employer . Later, Mr. Edwards joined a large national TPA as Vice President.

From 1988-94, Mr. Edwards served in several capacities for Manulife Financial, one of the largest insurers in North America. His duties at Manulife included product manager and director of marketing in the Toronto head office. Mr. Edwards established the Manulife Southwest regional office in Phoenix from 1990 through 1994. From 1994 to present, Mr. Edwards has continued the development and promotion of unique managed care models, as Vice President of National Benefit Resources, now owned by United Health Care and ultimately the founding of MATRIX Group Benefits L.L.C. as a managing general underwriter for stop loss and MATRIX Risk Management Services L.L.C., a separate risk management service company.

Matrix Group Benefits L.L.C. is a Managing General Underwriter for Medical Stop Loss coverage for partially self funded health benefit plans. Under this general description, Matrix has originated and developed several functional services which are established as affiliated companies or strategic relationships. The applications of these approaches to serving our consultant and plan sponsor clients position us to provide services and support that extend beyond the traditional MGU underwriting role.

Matrix Risk Management Strategies provides a three-dimensional approach to the partially self funded health benefit plans market. By working in partnership with consultants and plan sponsors, we are able to provide strategy and cost management resources that support the business goals of plan sponsors.

Shawn Lanter, R.E. Moulton is a sales representative out of the Kansas City office, joining R.E. Moulton, Inc. in the Fall of 2007. Shawn is a graduate of Kansas State University and began his career in employee benefits sales with Great West Life in 1998. Prior to joining R.E. Moulton, Shawn worked for Optum Health and Unimerica selling stop loss, life, disability and dental insurance products.

Michael Hirsch, East Coast Underwriters joined ECU in April 2008 as VP of Sales. Prior to ECU Mike was a member of the Senior Management Team with one of the largest Third Party Administrators in the country. Working in the industry since 1997 Mike held various positions, including Director of Stop Loss for both Claims and Underwriting. He also spent time in Sales and Product Development.

East Coast Underwriters (ECU) is a Managing General Underwriter, providing Medical Stop Loss Insurance to employer groups who self fund their medical benefits. Medical Stop Loss Insurance protects an employer's medical plan against catastrophic medical claims. ECU specializes on employer groups with 25-250 covered employee lives. In addition to Medical Stop Loss coverage, we also quote Life Insurance, AD&D, STD and LTD.
